The ISTRM met with a representative of the NPP, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Dr. Kaushalya Ariyarathne on the 30th of November 2023. The team and Director General, Dr. Asanga Gunwansa gave background into the operations of the ISTRM, outlining current progress, including stakeholder engagement and ongoing research into TRC processes in other jurisdictions. Dr. Harini Amarasuriya expressed NPP’s support towards a truth commission but raised concerns about trust, timing, and potential political manipulation. The issues with lack of implementation of recommendations as with the 2016 Consultation Task Force and victim fatigue was raised. The NPP representatives agreed to provide further feedback and input on the process once a draft Bill is finalised.
