The ISTRM met with MP M. A. Sumanthiran on the 3rd of November 2023. During the meeting, the Director-General introduced the proposed bill to establish a truth, unity and reconciliation commission and discussed the ISTRM’s foundational work to support this process. The team shared the current progress on country studies, stakeholder engagement and policy considerations for the proposed commission. Mr. Sumanthiran shared his feedback, highlighting the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and the challenges with truth-seeking. The constitutional assembly and consideration of foreign judges was also discussed. Other topics included the UNHRC resolutions, reconciliation efforts by previous governments and issues like land disputes and the Office on Missing Persons.
